Farm Animal & Meat Quality Standards

Whole Foods Market is very proud of our exceptional position in the grocery industry for championing innovative production systems that ensure the quality and the safety of the meat we sell. At the same time, we have taken into account the comfort, physical safety and health of the animals.  Not only are the poultry and meat we sell raised without antibiotics or added growth hormones, but also our rigorous standards require producers to prove that their meat and poultry fulfills our strict requirements.

Annual verification statements are required for each producer, outlining information about raising and handling practices, feed, facility design, environmental conditions, employee training, medical practices and animal welfare at the farm, in transportation and throughout processing.  To verify the information submitted by the producer, an inspection of each producer’s operation is conducted annually by Whole Foods Market.  Each producer is then required to successfully complete annual third party audits of their slaughter facility that monitor animal welfare according to a system developed by world renown animal welfare and facility design expert, Dr. Temple Grandin. These audits also include an assessment of food safety and strict compliance with the Food and Drug Administration’s Good Manufacturing Practices within the plant.

There are three steps that must be achieved successfully for consideration as a Whole Foods Market Approved Meat and Poultry Vendor.
